FedEx Fred called two days later. He wanted to come to Incognito to meet Brody before he stuck his neck out on her behalf. It seemed like a reasonable request. He arrived in a black SUV. He was not driving. His driver was clearly a bodyguard. He and Captain Fred exchanged insults before introductions were made. FedEx Fred looked to be in his early seventies. He had white hair that had receded slightly. He was a little soft in the middle and had more flesh around the neck and chin than he needed, but his eyes were sharp. He gave me a long look, sizing me up, before turning his attention to Brody. I hoped that Captain Fred had assured him that I was good people.

The driver stationed himself at the back door. The rest of us went inside for some privacy. Brody turned on the sparkle once she was face to face with FedEx Fred, but he was all business.

“There have been further developments since Fred first called me,” he said. “As usual, the press had omitted some key details.”

“What now?” asked Brody.

“This Bruce Ohr from Justice,” he said. “His wife actually worked for Fusion GPS.”

“How can that little tidbit have escaped scrutiny?” asked Captain Fred.

“Mueller only demoted Ohr after this was discovered,” said FedEx Fred. “In the meantime, she was using a HAM radio to keep her communications secret.”

“Old school,” I said. “Spooks can’t be listening to HAM radio, can they?”

“Doubtful,” said FedEx Fred. “But it’s clear that Mueller’s investigation is horribly compromised.”

“Where is Director Wray in all of this?” asked Brody. “He seems to be awfully quiet.”

“He’s quite busy attempting to protect the FBI’s secrets,” he said. “You are only one of a thousand loose ends, and a small one at that.”

“Is that good news?” she asked.

“Is there anyone actively searching for us?” I added.

“It is my understanding that there is no current pursuit,” he said. “But all the usual alerts remain. You’ve managed to avoid those so far.”

“We don’t want to have to continue avoiding them indefinitely,” said Brody.

“Your file is near the bottom of a large stack,” he said. “No one is reviewing whether or not finding you is still necessary. Wray is getting heat from all sides. His hands are full covering his ass.”

“And Comey’s,” said Captain Fred. “And Mueller’s.”

“How do we get his attention,” asked Brody. “Can we get him to simply close that file and turn off the alerts?”

“You’re still a threat to him,” said FedEx Fred.

“Great,” I said. “Where do we go from here?”

“I’d like to take Brody to Washington,” he said. “Get her in front of the right people. Bring her out of the shadows so that those in power can see her as a real person. Impress enough of them so that they’ll get the message to Wray not to mess with her, but not in any official proceeding.”

“Closed door meetings?” I asked. “No testimony at any hearing?”

“That’s my advice,” he said. “You don’t won’t to blow the lid off this thing.
